Pediatric & Adolescent Mental Health for the LGBTQ+ Community

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, a time to recognize and celebrate LGBTQ+ individuals and to  consider how we can take action to ensure equity for all members of our community. According to NAMI, LGBTQ+ youth are at greater risk for depressive symptoms and suicidality. Additionally, studies show that rates of substance abuse are 2‐4 times higher among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questoning (LGBTQ) youth than their heterosexual peers. Stigma, bullying, family acceptance, hostility in school or the community, and the threat of violence can all be contributing factors. Families and providers can work to support LGBTQ+ youth, below are readings and resources to get started:
