Co-occurring Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD: Prevalence, Assessment, and Treatment

Speaker: Dr. Naomi O.Davis, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Director of Clinical Services and Training, Duke ADHD Program, Duke University.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) commonly co-occur. Assessment of ADHD in the context of ASD is complicated by the lack of clear methods and the overlap in behavioral presentation. Improving diagnostic procedures is critical for informing future research and treatment on this comorbidity. Recommendations for assessment of comorbid ASD and ADHD, as well as current research on behavioral and pharmacological treatments for these co-occurring disorders, will be discussed.
